As I have meditated further upon the word, “Come” from
Matthew 11: 28, the following portion of scripture has run through my mind.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
James 4:8a
As we make a move or “Come” toward the Lord, He makes a move
toward us—He shows up.
How this looks
or feels or how we experience this, I believe, is uniquely crafted for each of
us. I can’t tell you how He will draw
near to you, I only know and believe Him when He says He will.
I’m reminded of a time of ministry involving a
young woman who was feeling very estranged from God. As a group of us began to pray for her, one
of the other women began to say to her, “God wants you to come to His tea party
and have tea with Him.”
I knew that this
woman, who was praying, loved to have tea, and God ministered to her within that
scenario; but something about this scenario for this young woman just did not sit right with me. I heard God saying, “That’s
how I meet with (name withheld), but this is not how I want to meet with her.”
I did not really know this young woman for whom we were praying. She
was from out of state and was simply visiting a relative at our church; but I
begin to see, in my mind's eye, God and her having a game of catch like a scene out of the movie, “Field of
Dreams”. I thought this seems odd to me,
but I have learned that these odd things that seem to come out of nowhere in my
head are more often than not, God; so, I knew I had to go with it.
As I began to share the vision in my mind with
her, she started to cry. Unbeknownst to
me, she had played female softball for most of her life. As she had “Come” and drawn near to God, He
was now drawing near to her—not in the way He would draw near to this other
woman in her tea time, and not how He would draw near to me, but how He would
draw near to her—to where He knew He could meet her and she would
understand.
So today, let’s “Come” with the expectation and the knowing
that He will “draw near”.
Even of the “how”,
drop all your preconceived notions and just wait.
Again, He’s inviting…Just
“Come”…He will show up.
